So, I know that this movie was listed at the very top of the "Thread for Movies that Don't Need a Thread" but it's just so awesome that it does deserve one. I can't believe that it is actually nearly 6 years old now, as it seemed much more recent, and yet really old all at the same time. The entire concept of the movie is mind blowing, and just a couple of sentences about it can never do it justice. You have to have open discussion about it for it to really REALLY hit you what is going on in the movie and the motivations of Donnie.

I just saw it recently it was a great film. I can't believe I hadn't heard of it when it came out. I wanna see it again right now.

I have been trying to see this movie for a long time. My mom won't rent it because it is rated R and my friend won't let me borrow it because he can't find it.

Donnie Darko is the fuckwin! Frank the bunny, crushed by a turbine- what else are you missing?

Although I must say- I'm still really confused about the plot.

I didn't watched the end but from what i've heard the plot is...

Frank comes to stop Donnie from dying,
but then Frank dies
So Donnie dies O_o

...that's pretty much it...in a nutshell lol.

Spoiler tags are your friend.
[spoil]From what I understand, Donnie has the ability to see the future. He can see that the world will end if he evades his own death, which is the turbine falling straight through his room. So boom, he saves the world by sacrificing himself.[/spoil]

Jake Gyllenhaal in his only meaningful role ever. October Sky wasn't as good and every film he was in after Darko has sucked.

That rabit freaked me out...

Good film, but bloody freaky blink.gif

One thing confuzzles me though...

[spoil]Donnie died by a turbine falling through his room.
In order for that turnbine to fall through his room, there had to be a plane for it to fall from...
If he went out, then that plane engine wouldn't kill him, and everything would continue on.
His sister and that girl band and others would be on that plane with the engine that falls off.
Then if he got killed by that engine, no one would have got into that band due to depression, there would be fewer people on the flight...
then the corsality (sp?) would be different meaning that plane might have flown somewhere else slight, taken off a bit earlier or a bit later...[/spoil]

Damit! Films with time time-travel and seeing the future are soo confussing.

The only ones that make sence are "Back to the Future"! biggrin.gif

Maybe it has something to do with this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schrödinger%27s_Cat

That theory says (i think) that if you put a cat where it's chance that it will die is 50/50, and he lives, then he will be in coexisting alive and dead states at the same time. gotta love wikipedia.

I don't think that has anything to do with time travel paradoxes.

Okay, here goes my best attempt at explaining what happened in the movie, courtesy of the Directors Cut version of the film.

[spoil]Okay, the initial fall of the turbine was caused by a corruption in the space time continuum. Since it was a corruption, a manipulated dead (a person who has died in the future and is being used to convey a message, in this case it's Frank in his costume) is sent back to lead Donnie along a path to fix the corruption. Should the corruption not be fixed, it would ultimately lead to the destruction of the Universe as we know it. So, to fix this corruption, it was Donnie's job as a, ah crap, can't remember the word for it, Living Vessel, or something along those lines... Um, anyways, it was Donnie's job to open up a time portal for the engine to fall through in the future. The engine falls off of the plane as the tornado begins the destruction of the world, from what I understand. Once Donnie has opened this portal, the engine falls through it, and back in time. So, Donnie sort of awakens from this other reality, back just mere seconds before the engine falls through the ceiling. He understands that should he dodge the engine, it would cause another corruption in time, and the world would end, so he allows himself to die to save the world, and no one is the wiser.

Now, Donnie's girlfriend had to die, so that Donnie would kill Frank, turning Frank into the Manipulated Dead. The two thugs were in Grandma Death's house looking for the supposed gems and other valuable items rumored to be there. Basically, everything happened for a reason, and time passed in a straight line for Donnie, but for everyone else, it skipped back. I have found here that while I understand the concept, it is hard for me to put it into words... So yeah...[/spoil]

I hope that helped a little bit...

I wondered why the Girlfriend died. She seemed no part of it.

Yeah, that was all really weird, and I couldn't figure it out until I miraculously found a thread on IMDB that wasn't a complete flame war...
