Never have I had a harder time with words.

This post is about a friend of mine who I met last summer and have since become very close. Her name is Stephanie. She's the kindest, most considerate person I have ever met. She's in love with books; she likes video games, and fantasy, and science fiction. She laughs at the dumbest of jokes. I couldn't ask for someone better in my life.

About two weeks ago, Stephanie's dad starting throwing up for no apparent reason. A few hours later, he was in the hospital. For about a day and a half, none of the doctors could figure out what was wrong. I was with Steph when her mom called to tell her that her Dad had cancer. A rare type of leukemia. Two days after that, he was transferred to the cancer treatment center in Seattle. Stephanie barely ever left the building; I visited her there overnight for a few hours before she made me go home in the morning.

Later that night... he died. And that was the hardest text message I have ever had to read.

The reason I'm telling you this is because I have a request to make, albeit a somewhat awkward one. John Rothrock spent a very large part of his life working with NASA's Deep Space Network, work that was very important to him (and pretty damned cool, in my opinion). Now that he's gone, Stephanie and her family want to put his ashes on the next Voyager 01 Memorial Service shuttle and send him out to be "buried" in deep space. Unfortunately, as I'm sure you can imagine, this is very expensive.

Steph has a page set up on some donation site where you can donate money towards this. I feel awkward asking for charity, and obviously none of you should feel obligated to help. Many of you, I'm sure, are like me and can barely afford to buy food every week. That said... any small sum helps. I'm just trying to make this happen for her. Here's the link for anyone who is interested. A thousand thanks to you.

And even if you aren't interested, or can't afford to help, thank you for reading.

That wasn't awkward man, I'm glad you shared this with us and I understand the courage that it took. I'm glad you did. I helped out where I could . I hope you're doing okay.

You know I'm kind of surprised that NASA didn't offer some kind of help given how long he's worked there. That's too bad. Maybe if NASA received more funding. /politics

Have you tried maybe telling the local news? They might be able to get the word out to the surrounding area and get a bunch of people to help.

I agree with Disease's idea. Promote the hell out of it. I'd gladly donate, but I'm broker than a shadow. If you see what I mean.

I hope your friend gets through this okay.

Oh, I definitely understand the whole being broke thing. It's sort of the reason this is a thing in the first place. Apparently they had to stop paying life insurance for him like... a month before he died or something because they couldn't afford it. Lost out on like 250 thousand dollars.

And yeah, we're promoting as much as we can.

I should be getting one paycheck tomorrow so I'll donate a bit then.

Out of curiosity, what happens if the goal isn't reached in a reasonable time?

I think this site works differently. All donations are immediately made, the goal is just a visible milestone but it's not like kickstarter.

SB's right. It's not a kickstarter-type thing, it's just a place where you can donate funds.

Also, thanks a lot, Aglor!
