Particles found to break speed of light

Antonio Ereditato, spokesman for the researchers, told Reuters that measurements taken over three years showed neutrinos pumped from CERN near Geneva to Gran Sasso in Italy had arrived 60 nanoseconds quicker than light would have done.

If confirmed, the discovery would undermine Albert Einstein's 1905 theory of special relativity, which says that the speed of light is a "cosmic constant" and that nothing in the universe can travel faster.

Next stop: warp drive.

A massive group of people can dream, Trance. A massive group of people can dream....

Still, that's some pretty awesome science there.

It's weird, reading this, the only thing that comes to my mind is simple this: "Engage!"

(Please tell me SOMEONE gets the reference!)

I'm not claiming to know more than these amazing scientists but I wouldn't start flipping shit JUST yet.

Read up on Cherenkov radiation if you don't know what that is and I'm curious what their margins of error were (something they obviously account for, I'm just curious for curiousity's sake).

Cool news though I'm excited for more analysis/results.

edit: unless they're comparing this to speed of light in a vaccuum, in which case cherenkov radiation/phenomenon has no bearing.

Found this quite funny when I read about it yesterday

Although it's yet to be confirmed (might be an error, might not be an error...) should be interesting to see.

Another reason to love Science.
Then again, relativity was always a theory. Never a science fact Theories are made to be proved wrong.

Quest for knowledge and understanding for the win.

Well:

"These hints were detected last year in Fermilab's MINOS experiment with neutrinos, but -- unlike those of OPERA -- were found to be within a normal margin of error."

from Reuters

So there goes my margin of error argument.

Aglor's post is exactly why we need a system where we can give like a +1 funny.

It's great for me because if Einstein is completely proven wrong on faster than light travel, I get 5 bucks from my friend.

Dude, I am in college...all I can afford to bet is 5 bucks. 10 bucks gets me food for at least a week. Maybe next week I will find some good food in my neighbor's trash can.

(I am only kidding, I bet 5 bucks because that's how much I had in my wallet at the time of the bet.)

Well, looks like relativity may have the last laugh after all.

Dammit science, why you gotta be so serious all the time?

we'll need more confirmation though, I'm curious as to how they could've overlooked such a fundamental component of any and all relativistic calculations.
